It started as a company responsible for IT services of Samsung Group and grew its business based on SI, IT outsourcing and logistics.

Through 30 years’ experience in IT industry, Samsung SDS is turning into a solution and service provider by developing technology required for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Samsung SDS is expanding its business to provide a reliable service covering data cleaning (IoT), analysis (Analytics), artificial intelligence (AI) based on mobile, cloud, security and block chain technology.[1]

It was listed on the Korea Exchange on November 14, 2014.[2]

Major businesses are IT service and logistics BPO (Business Process Outsourcing).

IT Service

IT service includes consulting/SI(system integration) and outsourcing. Consulting/SI builds IT system by receiving clients’ orders, and outsourcing runs system and infrastructure. Consulting/SI works on a project basis after receiving an order, so their revenues and profits tend to volatile as a pre-phase to secure a stable and profitable outsourcing. A main element of revenues is clients’ IT investment and infrastructure demand, the profitability is improving with a growing portion of outsourcing.[3]

  • Consulting/SI (System Integration) – In the past, most enterprise systems including ERP, MES, and CRM were designed and built using external software developed by global companies such as Oracle and SAP. In the recent years, however, service is increasingly provided based on its own solution such as AI, IOT, and block chain.
  • Outsourcing – It includes a service to provide human resources for IT system operation and a service to operate and manage infrastructure such as data center and network. Also, available services are private cloud with built-in data center and managed cloud with  external service.

Logistics BPO (Business Process Outsourcing)

Samsung SDS has been providing an integrated logistics service centering on Samsung Electronics global operation since 2011. Based on 'Cello', the solution developed by Samsung SDS, it helps business to optimize logistics process to reduce costs and improve efficiency, thus creating more value. It belongs to 4PL (the 4th Party Logistics), which works as an agency for selecting an optimal vendor and executing logistics process without holding assets such as ships and warehouses. SDS has secured orders mostly from Samsung Electronics, so when the sales of Samsung Electronics’ products increase, so does the work volume, revenues, margins of SDS. Now, SDS is expanding its business into Samsung affiliates and their customers.[4]

Brightics AI helps maximize the quality and yield of manufacturing sites or supports a real-time tracking of delivery to manage logistical risk.[5] For example, Samsung Electronics largely reduced the time to analyze to around 20 minutes for each case, which had taken for several hours. At the explosion in the Tianjin port in August 2015, monitoring based on data risk detected a risky situation in advance and gave a detour, thus minimizing damage to customers.
