Joonho Jeon[편집]

Born 1969 in Korea, Joonho Jeon since the early 1990s has been noted for his installation works, often consisting of sculptural pieces, video images, and paintings that showcase his unique re-interpretations of Korean socio-political environment. He received his Master degree from Chelsea college of Art and Design and Bachelor of fine Arts from Dongeui University. The artist believes that in order to understand reality, one must surpass the given reality and perceive the subject from a different light. With a humorous and satirical undertone, Jeon’s hyper-realistic works mainly focuses on the various incidents from the tumultuous Korean history, from which he attempts to elicit questions from the viewer. In 2012, he has been participated in Kassel Documenta13, and also awarded ‘Noon’ Art Prize from Gwangju Biennale. His works are included in the public collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Uli Sigg Foundation, Seoul Museum of Art, and National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea. [1]

His Life and Career[편집]

The world Jeon faces is unequal, and furthermore, illogical. Ideologies reproduced and re-circulated through mass media and educational institutions are exhausted and even absurd. In order to point out such phenomena and to reveal their mythical nature, the artist chooses to employ the most direct representational method, yet with an ironic twist. Roland Barthes’ structuralism understanding of myth is particularly beneficial in understanding such a strategy. As Barthes pointed out, the principle of myths is the transformation of history into truth, and what aims to reveal is the intentional fiction that is veiled under naturalization. However, the fallacy pointed out by the artist is more critical in its widespread reproducibility than in its fictional nature. [2]

For instance, a large part of the series <Hyper Realism> deals with the artist’s observations of the re-production and distribution of the myths of war and of the ideological division of Korea. The video animation Hyper Realism (The Statue of Brothers) is originated from a sculpture at the War Memorial of Korea, but it emphases the myth of the brotherly relation between North and South Korea rather than the factual event of the Korean War that inspired the original statue.[2]

Jeon’s work [3] is not just focusing on different kinds of power groups, classes and institutions, but rather, is a Foucauldian approach that explores the fundamental function of power. The artist’s ultimate emphasis on minorities as the object of repression also shows his particular interests in marginalization in everyday life as well as in politically determined minority groups. Moreover, it is worth noting that Jeon’s political messages are bound up with his personal views that are ultimately compassionate and existentialist.

Although the dominant narrative is based on Korean society, the multi-layered reality he depicts remains universal at its core with his commentary on the general conditions of human being. Notable past representations of JEON’s work [3] include, Scai the Bathhouse in Tokyo (2009), Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris (2008) and Perry Rubenstein Gallery in New York (2007). Important group exhibitions include Future Perspective: 2084 at Quadriennale Dusseldorf, Kunsthalle Dusseldorf (2014); Singapore Biennale (2013); Lichtsicht Biennale (2013); Sullivan Galleries, School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago(2013); Kassel Documenta 13 in Germany (2012); Yokohama Triennale (2011); Kunstmuseum Bochum (2010); The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2009); Moscow Biennial (2009); L’espace Louis Vuitton (2008); Nanjing Triennale, Busan Biennale (2008); Mori Art Museum (2007); Singapore Biennale (2006); Gwangju Biennale (2004). JEON was also the recipient of 2007 Grand Prix of the 27th Biennial of Graphic Art in Ljubljana and 2004 prize at the Gwangju Biennial.[1]

Quotes[편집]

"Go back and be the happier for having seen us, for having added a little hope to your struggle. Go on living while you may, striving with whatsoever pain and labor needs must be, to build up little by little the new day of fellowship, and rest, and happiness.", Yes, Surely! and if others can see it as I have seen it, then it may be called a vision rather than a dream by William Morris, News From Nowhere, 1890 [1]
